LiveandletLearn is simply a place where I (Michael Nelson) can join in the global conversations to learn, reflect and take action on the things that are important not only to me, but also to my network of family, friends, students, colleagues and on-line contacts. It’s a place for me to learn in the context of life, to practise what some people call Life based learning and have fun doing it! (BTW: That’s me on the left with the kid strapped to me.)
Professionally, I work at TAFE in western Sydney facilitating the learning of a group of people who are keen to learn Web Design skills towards a national qualification (see our Design Websites blog). Part of my time is also spent with another group who are learning basic computing skills (word processing, spreadsheets, operating a computer). As with most learning programs, a significant portion of our time is spent learning how to learn - learning and practising the skills that help us continue learning in the broader context of our whole lives. Sometimes this means me being a ‘teacher’, much of the time this means me being a coach or facilitator, but nearly all of the time this means being a learner myself.
In the past I’ve worked most recently as a software engineer, web developer, Intranet application developer, research assistant, Salesperson, Pizza deliverer, Check-out-chick (ah-em) and milk boy. For more relevant info about my work experience, see experience and skills.
Before joining the workforce full-time I studied Computer Science at the University of New South Wales. Since then I’ve undertaken some other quals which are listed at education and awards.
Personally, I love getting outdoors (and occasionally away from computers) to relax, hiking with Franzie and the kids through the beautiful Blue Mountains (our extended back-yard!) I enjoy playing Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee and mountain bike riding.
