Consumer choice is a great thing – don’t get me wrong – but after spending about 5 hours comparing MP3 players, I’m wondering if I (hehemm, and my wife and kids) would be happier with something that didn’t particularly fit all my needs wants. Can anyone help me out?!
Specifically, I’m after:
- a Flash-based device,
- 512Mb – 1Gb (don’t care),
- also supports Ogg sound files,
- records voice decently (ah, I’ll be able to use it for our client interviews in class!)
- plays/records radio,
- works easily on linux,
- If I was to really push it, I’d also like an alarm function
So far I’ve narrowed it down to two options (but am open to suggestions!). First, there’s the Samsung YP-T6 (which just so happens to be the one that my mate Joe got for his birthday… and he seemed pretty happy with it). According to Samsung it retails for around AU$220.
The other option that seems to fit my wants is the iAudio G3 which is listed for as low as $215 on shopbot. The advantage of the iAudio is that it has that alarm function, but according to a few reviews it’s feels a bit flimsy (pretty important if it’s going to bump around in my pocket and bag.
Any suggestions? If you’ve got an MP3 player, drop us a line to let me know what model and whether you’re happy with it…
Howdy! Thanks for the comment on my blog entry on this subject! I’m running Edubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger, which has been great.
In looking over what your needs are, it seems the iAudio G3 is the better choice of the two. However, the iAudio U3 comes with video…so if that’s of interest, then get the U3.
However, your best best seems the G3. Sure wish we’d met before I bought my iRiver T10…wanna buy it? Going cheap at $200 cash .
Take care,

Gday Miguel!
I’m running Ubuntu 5.10 on two computers which is also going great! (Recording/Streaming video with MythTV between the two… will post on that later!). I thought the ‘Edu’ part of Edubuntu was more for primary school-age children? Must check it out!
I do prefer the iAudio G3 over the Samsung YP-T6Z, if only for the alarm function, but the reviews about it being flimsy worry me a bit..I want to check it out first in a shop to see exactly how ‘flimsy’ it is… or find someone who’s owned one who can comment!
Thanks for dropping by Miguel.. i’m actually just reading/writing about your other article that Doug refered too… great stuff!
