Living and learning in Berlin

Berlin by unaciertamiradaIt’s hard for me to believe that in less than four days now I’ll be walking the streets of Berlin with Franzie and the kids. And not just for a holiday but - God willing - to live for the next seven-or-so years.

Already the past two months of preparation have been the biggest project that I’ve managed yet (thanks Basecamp), but with lots of help and support of family on both sides of the globe, everything has fallen into place relatively smoothly. We’ve now got some temporary furnished accommodation in Berlin for the first month right near family.

I feel like I can now appreciate why people talk of “uprooting” when moving overseas - uprooting a tree involves breaking so many of the smaller roots as you rip it out of the ground. I feel as though our lives have had lots of small tears and rips for the past 6 weeks saying goodbye to friends and family… but that is the reality of “uprooting” our family.

Colourful BerlinSo for the next while I’ll be learning to live in a new culture with a relatively new language. My 4-year-old, who likes to correct my German grammatical errors, keeps saying to me: “When we go to Germany Daddy, I’ll help you speak right” - let’s hope we all learn and adjust well! From this Sunday we’ll be spending time with family in Berlin and seeking out some permanent accommodation before our shipped belongings arrive. I’ll be starting work as soon as my visa is processed (4 weeks from arrival) but in the mean-time will enjoy exploring a new colourful city! Please keep in touch!

Western decadence and education

Pria ViswalingaI don’t generally watch much tv, let alone write about it, but I was excited recently to watch episode 4 of Decadence - the meaninglessness of modern life:

“In this episode, Pria considers the undervaluing of a broad ‘western’ education in modern Australia and the narrow emphasis on money and profit which has replaced it. He speaks to best-selling author John Marsden and Professor Paul Davies.”

The presenter, Pria Viswalingam (of SBS’s most successful series internationally A fork in the road), asserts that the rise of specialised study to suit commercial needs at Australian universities (and schools) is stripping the west of it’s greatest achievement - excellent education:

“Indeed, school these days is more about hothousing kids into university, to get a vocation that’ll earn a decent position at the salary trough.”

John MarsdenThe half-hour foray into Australian education highlights many interesting perspectives from people like John Marsden (who, coincidentally, opened his own school called CandleBark in 2006)

“Education is really struggling. It’s a funny thing that in Australia we claim that we value young people, we talk very beautifully about that, but we show our contempt for them by the amount of money we allocate to education, for example, by the way we structure schools. There is evidence everywhere we look, at just how little we value children. And so we talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.”

After a brief eye-opening journey through Australian (and Western) education, Pria concludes: “The West’s greatest achievement is being priced to sell, like factory trinkets, to straight A students - with a loan.”

And the scary thing is, “the West” doesn’t seem to care, as long as we make a buck while we can.

Choosing an MP3 Player

Consumer choice is a great thing - don’t get me wrong - but after spending about 5 hours comparing MP3 players, I’m wondering if I (hehemm, and my wife and kids) would be happier with something that didn’t particularly fit all my needs wants. Can anyone help me out?!

Specifically, I’m after:

  • a Flash-based device,
  • 512Mb - 1Gb (don’t care),
  • also supports Ogg sound files,
  • records voice decently (ah, I’ll be able to use it for our client interviews in class!)
  • plays/records radio,
  • works easily on linux,
  • If I was to really push it, I’d also like an alarm function

Samsung's YEPP T6So far I’ve narrowed it down to two options (but am open to suggestions!). First, there’s the Samsung YP-T6 (which just so happens to be the one that my mate Joe got for his birthday… and he seemed pretty happy with it). According to Samsung it retails for around AU$220.

iAudio G3The other option that seems to fit my wants is the iAudio G3 which is listed for as low as $215 on shopbot. The advantage of the iAudio is that it has that alarm function, but according to a few reviews it’s feels a bit flimsy (pretty important if it’s going to bump around in my pocket and bag.
Any suggestions? If you’ve got an MP3 player, drop us a line to let me know what model and whether you’re happy with it…

Ashamed to be an ‘Aussie’

Words can’t express how ashamed I feel watching the news tonight. Thousands of “Aussie’s” forming a mob - “reclaiming the shire” - oh my goodness. Shouting “Aussie aussie aussie… oi oi oi!!”, chasing and bashing anyone of middle-eastern appearance, attacking ambulances and ambulance officers who are trying to get the injured away.

There’s been some mild disgust… but as Ninglun points out, imagine if tables were turned… Imagine a scene where thousands of australians of middle-eastern appearance gathered together chanting some other exclusive taunt, bashing anyone who looks “aussie” - can you imagine how huge the reaction would be from the public and the media? Maybe it’s time to organise another anti-racism march? I’d certainly love to stand together with other Australians of all origins against this kind of behaviour…
